Podcast for Inquiry S04E05: Distinguishing jargon from gobbledygook - Dr. Jonathan Stea on evidence-based medicine over wellness industry misinformation

Dr. Jonathan Stea (BlueSky, Facebook) is a full-time practicing clinical psychologist and an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Calgary. In today’s episode, Jonathan reveals that many mental health practitioners have no scientific grounding for their treatments, which can lead to disaster - yet it can be very difficult for an layperson to distinguish between a new technique they don’t understand that works, and a new technique they don’t understand that is gibberish. “Quantum neurological reset therapy” should get your spidey sense tingling, and Jonathan shares a few other signs of pseudoscientific grift as well.

There will always be a stigma around mental illness, and rightfully so, because sufferers are all downside, in that their inability to deal with the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune puts an additional burden on those around them. Even the mentally ill prefer those with robust minds that always maintain an even keel under duress... Having said that, unless there are demonstrable physiological issues with your brain, you're not crazy, so if you still can't handle much, you're just weak and lack resiliency. Blame your mother for breastfeeding you too long! And stay away from me...

And speaking of mothers: Smart women don't breed with dumb guys, so why do so many smart guys tolerate woo woo in exchange for pussy, and allow dingbats to inflict it on their children? They know that half their children's genes come from their mother, and that having some sort of trad wellness influencer available to read Goodnight Moon to them every night won't mitigate that, right? How do you think we got RFK Jr.?

    Happy International Women's Day!
