Donald Robertson (Substack) is a writer, cognitive-behavioural psychotherapist, and trainer. He is one of the founding members of the Modern Stoicism nonprofit, and the founder and president of the Plato’s Academy Centre nonprofit in Athens, Greece.
My conversation with Donald traces the path from ancient Stoicism to the modern day. The word stoicism had come to mean something very different over time, but that has started to change as Stoicism (the philosophy) has been more popular in recent years. Stoic principles lie at the heart of cognitive behavioural therapy, and we talk about how incorporating Stoic principles into one’s own life can lead to more emotional resilience, a greater sense of satisfaction, and more meaningful relationships with others.

To trick angry men into therapy, Jordan Peterson lures them with toxicity interspersed with superficial and cherry-picked 'learnedness' that passes for intellectualism among the stupid. And then he hits them over the head with derivative self-help home truths they could find in any other book of advice, if they had the presence of mind to bother to look. So it's very clever of Donald Robertson to title his book How to Think Like a Roman Emperor in order to lure them away, given that, apparently, men think about the Roman Empire every few minutes...
ReplyDeleteStoicism is indeed a great approach to life, but so is stoicism, as long as it doesn't become toxic. Nobody likes a Whiny. Little. Bitch., and the pendulum has swung too far in normalizing mental health creep. Yes, suggesting that everyone is crazy and therefore no one is crazy is all very democratic, but it's just not true. So suck it up and take it up with your therapist instead of lashing out and dumping your problems on everyone else! Paying someone hundreds of dollars per hour to listen to your crap focuses the mind and will allow you to bring your A game to your relationships with friends and family...
