Dr. Evelyn Forget is Canada’s foremost expert on Basic Income, and the author of Basic Income for Canadians: From the COVID-19 Emergency to Financial Security for all. Dr. Forget describes what Basic Income is, and how it differs from UBI (Universal Basic Income). She talks about the results of a Basic Income pilot conducted in Canada, and answers the question: If Basic Income is such a great idea, why aren’t we doing it already? Finally, Dr. Forget explains what a Canadian Basic Income program would look like.

  1. Those who oppose UBI should consider that they're already paying a lot of money for social support systems/programs that are wasteful and don't work very well. Why not use that money better? And they will be the first ones howling for the government to force the automation/AI winners to spread the wealth when they themselves become completely unemployable, despite their best efforts and the fact that they're highly educated!

Fortunately, the Canadian government is quietly and incrementally rolling out and scaling UBI by introducing and streamlining the CWB (Canada Worker Benefit) while concomitantly automating tax filing for the vulnerable. Kudos! If some people are better off receiving a poverty-line income than working the shitty jobs that are the only work for which they will ever qualify, it's money well spent!
