Podcast for Inquiry S03E04: Maryam Namazie and The Paris Appeal

Maryam Namazie (@MaryamNamazie) is the spokesperson for One Law for All and the Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain. In December 2023, the CEMB released The Paris Appeal, calling for Laics of all countries to unite. Maryam explains the purpose and content of The Paris Appeal, and along the way gets into the difference between laïcité and secularism, and reveals the religious court system in England that denies many women the rights they ought to enjoy. Maryam also talks about World Hijab Day, what the hijab means, and concludes with a passionate analysis of Québec’s religious symbols law.

  1. She had me until the hijab ban... I hate it too, but the practice will not be eradicated by force. Women will only double down, and it will return with a vengeance, as has been seen with the re-emergence of conservative religious practices in societies where they were previously suppressed. We need to tolerate it by ignoring it, lest it be normalized and glamorized, as is happening now as a backlash to objections... Sati and FGM are false equivalencies; a better analog is the persistent custom of women taking their husbands' names upon marriage. I don't hear any calls to ban that misogynistic practice, which also undermines the equality of the sexes... Let's not pretend that women in the West don't have choices, even when pressured and coerced!

And it is simply false that students are influenced socially/culturally by teachers! To kids and teenagers, teachers of any age are OLD and their attire is LAME! With the exception of sports stars and celebrities, they emulate the cool kids in their milieu slightly older than they. So if you want to de-program hijabi youth, make sure they aren't ghettoized with large cohorts of like minorities to the point they form identify cliques during the formative years when they are trying to strike the right balance between fitting in and standing out... Are we going to ban the loose, full-body clothes religious teachers wear as well, or only their head scarves?

As for the anecdotes about her son being pestered above his mom's head coverings, or lack thereof, by a Persian teacher and university classmate, l hope he told them to fuck off and mind their own business! And that he found hijabs gross... That would have had a significant effect on brainwashed women concerned with the male gaze!
